Deputy Vice Chancellor

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Umar Ahmad Mukasa Kasule

Is the Deputy Vice Chancellor at Muteesa I Royal University in charge of academic affairs. He joined MRU in August 2017 after having served in various academic and administrative positions at the Islamic University in Uganda for a period of 27 years. He soon served as the Acting Vice Chancellor of MRU from January 2018 to June 2019. He graduated from Makerere University for both first and Master’s degrees and pursued doctoral studies at the famous International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization, Malaysia (ISTAC – under the scholarship and patronage of the distinguished Prof. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas), and one of the colleges of the International Islamic University Malaysia. He specialized in Islamic studies with a bias in Islamic Civilization.

His research interests are in comparative civilization studies focusing on the Islamic, the Western and the African wherein he searches for influences, contributions, relationships. He is convinced that the commonalities between civilizations could formulate the basis for tolerance and peaceful coexistence, while the differences therein could be the basis for respect of one another, within the human race that has had diverse experiences in the historical process. He is a Fulbright Scholar (2007 Religion in Public Place in the US – University of California @ Santa Barbara). He has a number of publications up his sleeve and the most outstanding ones are the two books namely: i) Islam and Human Rights: A Critical Assessment of Contemporary Muslim Approaches to the Human Rights Discourse. (Kuala Lumpur: IIUM Press, 2009), ii) Pursuit of Human Dignity and Justice: Islamic Alternative Values to Human Rights, (Kuala Lumpur: A.S. Noordeen Publishers, 2009).
