Our Vision

To become the premier tourism school of knowledge and excellence in producing graduates who are capable of injecting innovative ideas and practice into the tourism business world, in a bid to promote local and international visibility and leadership in tourism related research, teaching and training, to facilitate the expansion and development of tourism industry in Uganda.

Our Goal

The overall goal of the programme is to provide students with knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes in tourism management. This will enable them to effectively participate in the development of tourism as an academic discipline and improve the standards of management in the tourism industry. In the end, this will offer our students great career opportunities that would assist them in finding suitable industry placements (internships) which are an integral part of their studies.

Our Mission

 The mission is three-fold, and as the premier tourism school in Uganda, Muteesa I Royal University will achieve its vision by the following actions:

Providing equal opportunity for all, while maintaining an affordable, high quality education;

Providing relevant programmes of study which emphasize a greater focus on higher education and professional studies;

Expanding its advantages to become the leading institution in linking tourism programmes to development needs in Uganda through education, collaboration and partnerships;

Enhancing the cultural and environmental aspects in the promotion of education on domestic and international tourism within the framework of sustainability.

The increasing growth of the tourism industry demands training professionals, a high degree of professionalism in the hospitality field. Thus, it calls for training guides, rangers, personnel managers, professional drivers plus many in this discipline because of the increasing importance of the tourism and travel industry in Uganda. The program is for people who are passionate about making customers happy and who love marketing and promotion of tourism products to intending participants who are energetic and creative to help people have a great time at resorts, hotels, and other attractions?

Studies and examinations for this Degree programme shall be governed by the general regulations and statutes of the University.

Admission to the first year

Admission into the first year will be through any of the four avenues:

  • Direct entry;
  • Diploma Holders Scheme; and
  • Mature Age Scheme.

(a)        Direct entry

A candidate must have:

Sat U.C.E. examination (or equivalent) with at least 5 passes, and (ii)  Obtained at least two principal passes at Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education(U.C.A.E.) obtained at the same sitting.

The Weighting System is as follows:

  1. Essential Two best done of All A’ level Subjects
  2. Relevant Third best done of All A’ level Subjects
  3. Desirable General Paper
  4. Others All Others

(b)       Diploma Holders scheme

Obtained a distinction/credit upper grade in a relevant field from a recognized institution or a credit lower plus a working experience from any hospitality establishment.

(c)        Mature Age scheme

Aged 25 years and above and has passed a mature age entrance examination with 50% and above. The National Council shall accredit the mature age entry exams.

(d)       Bridging/access/remedial classes: that is, for students who have done their secondary education outside Uganda, which shall be accredited by the National Council.

  • Tuition and other University fees are due on the first day of the academic year. Privately- sponsored students who cannot pay full fees at the beginning of the academic year are required to pay at least 60% of the course load if they wish by the set deadline.
  • First year privately-sponsored student who fails to pay the registration fee at the end of the second week of the beginning of an academic year shall forfeit his/her place in the University
  • A continuing privately-sponsored student who shall not have paid fees by the end of the
  • The sixth week shall be de-registered.
  • Students should complete paying all the University fees by the sixth week of a semester and be registered then.
  • In case a student fails to raise enough money to pay for a full semester load a student can chose courses within the next first six weeks and make payment for the course load he/she can afford and get registered.
  • The minimum course loads to be permitted under this arrangement should be 60% of the total credit units for that semester.
  • A student will not be allowed to pay University fees and register after the end of the sixth week of a semester.
  • Only registered students will be allowed to use University facilities, attend lectures, do coursework, and sit for final examinations.
